"Korean Dispatched Teachers Begin Local Activities in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines."

Thirty-four Korean teachers participating in the 2023 Asia-Pacific Teacher Exchange for Global Education (APTE) flew to Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines to begin their educational activities. After completing the Pre-Departure Training at APCEIU in July and online lectures, the Korean teachers participated in Local Adjustment Training (LAT) from the 16th to the 19th of August.

 

The LAT for the Korea-Cambodia Teacher Exchange Programme was conducted in Phnom Pehn for eight Korean teachers for four days from 17 to 20 August.

Prepared by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of the Kingdom of Cambodia (MoEYS) the training was held consisting of lectures on Cambodian history, culture, education system, and basic Khmer language. In addition, by visiting the Tuol Sleng Museum, Korean teachers had a chance to learn about Cambodian historical background. They also had time to listen to precautions and guidelines on local safety through a meeting with representatives from the Korean Embassy in Cambodia. On 20 August, officials from the MoEYS and representatives from 4 Cambodian host schools gathered for a welcoming ceremony for Korean exchange teachers.

 

 

From 16 to 18 August, another LAT was conducted in Jakarta, Indonesia, by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (MoECRT). Ms Darmawati, a public relations officer at the Secretariat of the Directorate General of Culture, MoECRT, gave a lecture to the Korean teachers on the Indonesian education system and social aspects. Also, the Bahasa (Indonesian language) class was held by Mr. Balai Guru Fungerak Banten, a language teacher of Bahasa and Korean. Before being dispatched to the schools, the 8 Korean teachers visited the Korean Embassy in Indonesia and received safety guidelines lectures.

  

 

For ten Korean teachers, the LAT was conducted in Terengganu, Malaysia, from 3 to 5 September. The training was hosted by the Ministry of Education Malaysia and organized by the Terengganu State Office of Education. During the training, Korean teachers learned about Malaysian multicultural society, the Malaysian Education system, and the characteristics of schools in Terengganu. Also, basic Malay language lessons were conducted, which will help Korean teachers with their Malaysian pupils.

   

 

At the welcoming ceremony, Mr. Tuan Haji Azman bin Othman, the Assistant Director of the Terengganu State Office of Education mentioned that the State Office would support the Korea-Malaysia Teacher Exchange Programme and each individual teacher in a way that all participants can consider Trenaganu as their second hometown rather than just a place to stay for a simple three-month period to conduct classes. Also, Ms. Hajah Rossheta binti Abdul Rahman, the Assistant Director of the Ministry of Education Malaysia, said she expected this Programme to be a bridge for bigger cooperation between Korea and Malaysia to nurture the next generation as global citizens.

The Philippine LAT was conducted in Metro Manila for 8 Korean teachers. On 17 August, officials from the Department of Education of the Philippines and stakeholders from four host schools attended a welcoming ceremony for the dispatched teachers. After the welcome ceremony, a series of lectures were given to the participants on the Philippine Education System, Society, Culture, and Global Citizenship Education(GCED) activities in the Philippines. MA. EIRISH S. ZULUETA, who was invited to Korea gave a basic lecture on the Philippine language. An introduction to Philippine cultural heritage was given by AFRIL MAE B. RECLA teacher, another alumna of APTE. After that 8 dispatched teachers visited the Korean Embassy in the Philippines and received the safety guidelines they must be aware of while staying in the Philippines.

  

 

A total of 34 Korean teachers dispatched to 16 schools are planning to conduct integrated subject courses combining GCED, as well as Korean language and culture classes, at local schools for approximately three months.
